Every year the first 10 days of Asviga month in Hindu calendar are celebrated as Dussera in India
The tenth day of them is celebrated as Vijayadashami
Almost everyone in India celebrates this festival
But so many of them didn’t know why we celebrate it
That is what we are discussing here
The reasons why we celebrate Dussehra or Navaratri
The first and foremost reason to celebrate Dussehra is
1. Celebrating the slaying of demon Mahishasura
Once upon a time, there was a powerful demon named Mahishasura
Under whose leadership all the demons asuras waged a war against the demigods and defeated them
Then the demigods go to goddess Durga and pray for help
Then Durga Devi, the divine mother, mounted on a lion and
fought with mighty demon Mahishasura for nine days in night avatars means 9 different forms
That avatars are Balatripurasundari Devi, Annapurna Devi, Gaytri Devi, Mangala Gauri Devi, Saraswathi Devi, Lalitha Tripura Sundari Devi, Mahalakshmi Devi, Durga Devi and Mahishasuramardhani Devi or Bhadra Kali Devi
And then on the tenth day, Durga Devi killed Mahishasura and turned into her rest form as Raja Rajeswari Devi
This day is celebrated as Vijayadashami for the victory of good over evil
In India, especially in south India Durga Devi idol is decorated as all of the avatars during that ten days
This is one reason for the celebration of Dussehra
2. Celebrating the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana
It was on this day that Lord Rama killed the ten-headed Ravana,
who had abducted His wife Sitadevi.
This is the reason why this day is called Dussehra
The word Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words Dasha(ten) and Hara(Defeat)
People celebrate this victory of righteousness over evil by burning the long statue of Ravana made with crakers.
It is called as Ravana Dahana
3. Ending of Pandavas Exile(Vanavasam)
When Pandavas lost a game Pachakalu means Dice game to Kauravas,
They were banned from the kingdom to live in the forest for 12 years(Vanavasam) and incognito for a year (Aranyavasam)
After 12 years of exile, they lived in the kingdom of Virata for one year for incognito life.
During that year they wrapped their weapons in a cloth and hidden them on a branch of Shami tree outside the kingdom
According to Mahabharata, on the day of Vijayadasami,
they successfully completed their one year of incognito life.
On that day, Arjuna collected the weapons on the Shami tree and defeated the Kauravas who attempted to steal the cattle of King Virata
Since that day, Shami trees and weapons have been worshipped on the ninth day of Navaratri
To symbolise this specific event in the Mahabaratha
4. Sarasvathi puja
In all the days of Navaratri
The day of Mula nakshatra is more auspicious
Because on that day Durga Devi is decorated as Saraswathi Devi the goddess of learning
On this day many people do one special pooja for their children called Akasharabaysam means learning to write for the first time.
From the old times, it is believed that, if we start our learning for this day we will be successful.
5. The Beginning of the harvest season
Vijaya Dashami also marks the starting of the harvest season
People seek the blessings of mother earth for a good harvest by performing pooja
Every living being lives by eating food grains,
These food grains are produced only with the help of soil and water
In the olden times, water is obtained only with rains
At that time Panchabuthalu means air, water, fire, sky, earth are considered as demi-gods.
So to get good rainfall they have to impress these demigods
For that, they perform poojas for these demigods on Vijayadashami and starts harvesting
They believe that if they harvest in this way they will get a good yield
These are the reasons why we celebrate Vijayadashami
The main reasons to celebrate it is the victory of good over evil and
And to respect the 5 sources Pancha Bhuthalu which give us the food we daily eat
So always stay good in a righteous manner and
respect all the persons from farmers to cook
who use that 5 sources correctly and make our food.
And at last a Very Happy Dussehra to you all
